Key Career Design Trait 22: GRACIOUSNESS

Trait 22 is about embodying the charm and grace to bridge the gap between innovation and the status quo. This skill helps you to understand and navigate emotional landscapes in the office and is invaluable in positions that involve managing social dynamics. This energy naturally carries the charm and grace to build relationships with key stakeholders up and down the business. With your natural elegance, you can bring about change in a way that makes others receptive to new ideas. You are inspired with passions that can transform any environment that you are in. It is important that you align your passions with your professional purpose so your workflow will be optimized, and you can feel like yourself at work.

This emotional intelligence works best in an environment that is harmonious and supportive due to a sensitivity for tension and discord in the office. Time away for self-care is important and you may want to consider taking well days off to minimize the sick days off. Careful with the sudden fluctuations of your emotions as your graceful tone can dive into disgracefulness. It is best to excuse yourself while your energy is in an emotional low and exit the environment while your smile is still poised so that you can breathe  and feel your feelings without having to express them.  Accept your mood and don’t try to rush the process or allow anyone else to try to change your mood, it will recalibrate in due time whether its 5 minutes, 5 hours or 5 days. Don’t try to rationalize your feelings or fight them, simply give yourself the space and grace to recharge your creativity and to get clarity. In order for you to successfully bring any project to completion, you have to feel your feelings and let them run their course.

As a colleague or leader, you are able to deliver critical updates and have crucial conversations with style and grace. Most people don’t have awareness or access to such a wide range of emotions and the capacity to feel so deeply, its like being an emotional role model. You exude authenticity and others are easily charmed by you as you profound kindness at your core with a natural social grace.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

It’s important that you have an awareness of what emotionally triggers you so that can maintain your poise while you find some privacy to allow your emotions to run their course and complete their process. It is likely that if you are not able to maintain your composure, you will shift the emotional energy in the room and create uncomfortable and unintended consequences for yourself and your team. Nonetheless, remove any shame from having big emotions and use them as information and data points while remembering they are transitory like weather.

Additionally, it is critical for you to wait for the right moment to share your ideas and don’t attempt to do so if you are in an anti-social mood. If you don’t feel in harmony with your emotions, you may miss the mark in the meeting and subject yourself to rejection so its best to postpone communication for a later time or date. Whatever you are feeling at the moment will be expressed when you interact with others. If you’re feeling great, share it far and wide, if you are feeling melancholy, retire and honor your need for privacy while you await your creativity to sprout back.

Ask yourself:

  • Can I identify moments during my workday where my emotional fire is blazing or almost extinguished and how do I handle those times?

  • Am I mindful of the emotional energy that I project out into my work environment?

  • How do my feelings help empower and manifest my creativity that fuels my passion projects?
