Trait 50: Culture Champion - Professional Development Key of the Week

Updated: Nov 5, 2024

This professional trait is the sensible energy of the gatekeeper and law maker. You uphold the tenants and establish preferred behaviors to serve as the guiding principles for your organization. The Upstander who pipes up to denounce unacceptable behaviors that threaten the legacy or the future of the business and not just stand by. This trait is about values, and you are naturally attuned to what is fair or what is unjust and make efforts to ensure unity in the community. The cultural champion who assesses which policies, procedures, and practices best serve the organization while everyone is encouraged to be personally responsible and contribute.

This social responsibility can sometimes be overwhelming if you are overly concerned about letting down the people who you are responsible for. Be mindful not to let your sense of responsibility cross boundaries where you're doing everything for others that they can easily do for themselves as that disrupts the equilibrium. Additionally, remember to care for yourself first so that you can care for others. You have the ability to create social harmony without even thinking about it and create equilibrium by balancing opposing agendas, sifting and redistributing until perfect harmony is achieved.

You understand that honesty and transparency cleanses the organizations culture to allow for hidden agendas to be laid on the table. To set the stage for this, employees must be encouraged with creative empowerment via trust. Trusting the employee to take responsibility for their own contributions allows for social equilibrium in the form of heterarchy in lieu of hierarchy. Heterarchy is an organizational structure of self-empowered individuals who are working together creatively without the limiting bureaucracy of hierarchy. Heterarchy is based upon the principle that if an individual within the group isn't personally aligned with the mission vision and values then the group cannot align with the mission vision and values. The adage “Please take responsibility for the energy that you bring it to the room.”  summarizes this notion well.

Dr. Carl Jung wrote about the dynamics of family hierarchy citing that the strongest psychological influence in a child's environment is the unlived life of the parent. This universal law is applicable in the office as well. An unaware or irresponsible leader is the single most powerful cultural influence in the workplace. Just like an unhealed parent creates an atmosphere of unrest in the home, an emotionally unintelligent leader impacts the psychological safety of an organization and then goes on to make the assumption that the employees need more development, discipline, or direction rather than themselves.

With this trait you instinctively act as the guardian, sustaining and increasing the well-being of individuals on your team and the organizational at large.  You assess whether traditional values will still serve the greater good in the present and in the future. You are a change management expert who companies wish they would have called on to contribute the strategic plan after a merger or acquisition has gone bad because they didn’t incorporate diversity, equity and inclusion as a business imperative.
