Trait 10: Self-Respect - Professional Development Key of the Week

Updated: Feb 4

Behaving as your individual, authentic self is not only a gift to yourself, but it’s a gift to those who have the pleasure of working with you. You lead by example, Trait 10 walks the walk and says less. Your behavior inspires others through your authentic actions which prompts them to act with integrity as well. You demonstrate courage to stand alone, and your colleagues are encouraged by watching you stand up for what you believe in even if that means going against the grain. Trait 10 gives the gift of knowing exactly who you are and showing up as your whole and best self. It is correct for you to respect yourself first and foremost and that compassion naturally extends out to those in your work environment. Self-respect is your secret as to how you are able to see things from your teammate’s perspective and help them.

If Trait 10 is activated in your Career Design Chart, your coworkers, direct reports and leaders can sense that there is so much more to you beyond the surface, and they are correct. You neither receive nor resist the expectations that others may project onto you because you radially accept yourself as is. This is an inherent skill of being a role model as you are comfortable being yourself without denying parts of your diversity, personality or attributes. Other professionals find you easy to work with and you always know the correct behavior for the moment or environment.

If you find yourself not being able to relate to others because you are too self-absorbed, take that demonstration of not being your best self as a sign that you are not in the best environment for you to thrive in. This may feel like a balancing act because this is the energy to set yourself apart from the others for the purpose of self-preservation and self-empowerment which then gives others permission to do the same. This energy permeates out from you, into the team environment and ultimately the company, setting it apart from it’s competitors with purposeful uniqueness.

Self-care is an important part of self-respect. You are designed to naturally influence others, not to be influenced, so taking time to detox from the day and recalibrate your inner compass and refresh your self-esteem is important to your well-being. With this trait, this more you understand yourself, the more you can understand others, a project or an assignment. Self-assuredness has been socialized out of us to compensate for homogeneous work environments which can be harmful instead of harmonious to most. This week, be reminded that you don’t have to lose yourself to love the work you do.

Be yourself. That is the most important skill you can master… you. You can’t be your best self at work if you don’t know who you are how you are designed to thrive and contribute to a team. Are you designed to be an entrepreneur? Do you work best with a partner? Or perhaps you’d thrive in a small department of 3-5 people. Maybe you have Alpha energy and have a natural inclination to lead a large company. Are you designed to be a go-getter and innovator or are you hard wired to be an analyst evaluating the health and progress of your work environment?
