Wait for the Invitation Is Not the Job Description: Welcome to Projector OJT™

I don’t know about you, but when I first came across Human Design and saw that, as a Projector, I was supposed to wait for an invitation to engage, speak, share, lead, advise, and contribute… I clutched my pearls as my not-self took offense immediately. Absolutely not. I was already running as fast as I could in that proverbial hamster wheel to be valuable.

Waiting for an invitation went against almost every grain of what hustle culture and corporate environments had taught me to do. How was I supposed to keep up, let alone compete? How was I supposed to remain visible, be seen as valuable, and be recognized as a leader if I wasn’t constantly asserting myself, volunteering, speaking up, proving my usefulness, and making sure people saw me doing all the things?

Like a lot of us, I had been taught to seize the day, advocate for myself, take initiative, and make things happen if I wanted to be a sought-after leader and team player. Carpe diem. Veni, vidi, vici.

So the idea of waiting felt less like wisdom and more like a career liability.

But here I am years later, a much better version of my authentic self, and I understand it differently now. My wisdom is in the wait. My contribution is in the wait. That’s where my alignment and authenticity reside. Waiting for and allowing nature to take its course is not about becoming passive.

It was about me getting out of my own way and becoming more discerning about where, when, and with whom I use my energy and insight. And now that I know better, I do better, as Maya Angelou taught us.

And when I began to practice waiting and noticing the experience, I began to relax, relate to myself better, release the conditioning and energy of chasing, and learn how to attract. But after a while, I started realizing something was missing. Wait for the invitation tells me something about how I interact with life. It does not tell me what I am actually here to see, what kind of guidance I am built to offer, what environments sharpen or distort my perception, what people are likely to recognize me for, or how my specific strengths become useful in the real world.

I realized that waiting is not the whole gig; it is just the initial interaction strategy to position yourself for success.

And although it has worked wonders for me, I see that a lot of Projectors are still stuck there and can’t quite make the adjustments to align with how we are designed to move in the world. We hear “you are here to guide” and then spend years wondering, guide what? And that is absolutely the correct question because every Projector is not here to guide in the same way.

Some Projectors are naturally strategic. Some see systems. Some see people. Some see timing. Some see inefficiency. Some can hear what is off. Some can sense what is unsustainable. Some recognize talent in other people before those people recognize it in themselves. The word Projector itself tells you something about your overall mechanics. What it does not tell you is the entire texture of your wisdom. That part is where it gets personal because, as you know, we all have our own unique energetic blueprint. And that is how you find your main character energy.

A Projector's perspective is not one-size-fits-all

When I guide, I am not simply “being a Projector.” I am guiding through my particular design.

And that, my fellow seer, is news you can use because two Projectors can look at the exact same situation and notice completely different things.

  • One may immediately see the broken process.

  • Another may notice the wrong person is in the wrong role.

  • Another may hear that the leader is saying one thing but signaling another.

  • Another may recognize that the timing is wrong.

  • Another may see that the whole team is trying to solve a problem that is not actually the problem.

That is what makes me shake my head when Human Design gets reduced to five Types and a few slogans. “Wait for recognition and an invitation” is useful... after the shock wears off. But as a Projector who is also a business sociologist, I want to know: What are you being recognized for? And maybe even more importantly: What should people be recognizing you for as a billable skill set? That is where the conversation starts getting interesting and the types of nuances we talk about in Projector OJT, monthly on-the-job training.

Every Projector has at least one billable skill set, a channel, or a strength, as we refer to them in HD for Business (BG5) language. I have two of these zones of genius or areas of expertise. One is actually about being an expert in my areas of interest in order to share my standard of excellence, depth, and wisdom as I help others refine their skills and strengths. I’m in good company because Maya Angelou, a Manifestor who I quoted earlier, also has this exact energy in her chart. And with being a 1/3, when I study a person or experiment with a process, I'm locked in until I understand it well enough to recognize patterns, make distinctions, and help someone use the information more skillfully in real life.

A client may come to me saying, “I need a new job,” but my mind goes to solving for the type of environment they thrive in and what type of work energizes or exhausts them. That is an expression of my Channel of Talent with the line quality 16.4, which is literally “The Coach/Guide/Leader.” And for those of you who really understand the language of HD and astrology, my 16.4 is exalted in my Gemini Jupiter, so if you know, you know. And for those who are not well versed, we get into this depth in your chart in my 1:1 Career Alignment & Leadership Lab.

So, although I don’t have Energizer Bunny energy or the spark for a cool party trick, my assignment is to help you understand your assignment so you can do your thing. I was so glad when that finally clicked for me because I was beyond exhausted and physically burnt out from trying to play in all of the cool reindeer games, not realizing that I didn’t fit in with Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, and Vixen (read Manifestors, Generators, and Manifesting Generators)... because I was Rudolph.

I also carry the strength of pressure. I naturally provide the intention and anticipation necessary to move the collective into new experiences. I share this channel, full of imagination and hope, with fellow Projector Barack Obama; it is his only channel. This one has taught me something very different about advising people: You cannot always think your way into knowing what an experience is going to mean. Sometimes you just have to live it.

That may be why so much of my work eventually becomes orientation. I am interested in what happens when someone is standing at the edge of a new experience asking:

Should I take this job? Should I leave? Should I accept the invitation? Should I launch the thing? Should I enter this relationship? Should I respond and move? Should I try again?

There is often desire sitting underneath those questions. Expectation too. We imagine what an experience is going to give us. Success. Belonging. Satisfaction. Peace. Surprise. Freedom. Love. A softer life.

And sometimes the experience delivers exactly what we hoped for. Sometimes it delivers something completely different. That does not necessarily make it a mistake. My 1/3 nature has made me deeply respectful of what experience teaches that theory cannot. I can study something thoroughly, but eventually I am going to need to see what happens when it meets actual life.

That is part of why I am much more interested in experimentation than imitation. I do not want you building your career because somebody else's formula worked. I want you to become better at observing what happens when your design meets your life. That is a very different kind of self-trust.

Projectors can get exhausted trying to guide from the wrong place

Here is where this becomes practical. If you do not understand what you are actually strong at perceiving, you can end up trying to advise everybody about everything. That is leakage, not guidance. And Projectors can become particularly vulnerable to it because people often sense that we see things.

  • They ask questions.

  • They vent.

  • They bring problems.

  • They want perspective.

  • They may even call it recognition.

And I’ll hold your hand when I say this... but being asked for something does not automatically mean you are being recognized correctly.

Sometimes people recognize that you are available. Sometimes they recognize that you are competent. Sometimes they recognize that you will carry what they do not want to carry. Sometimes they recognize that you will give them premium insight for free. That is not the same thing as being seen for your actual wisdom. This is where the soft life becomes a leadership practice. Protecting your energy is not about becoming unavailable to the world. It is about becoming more discerning about where your guidance belongs.

I don’t think Projectors need to disappear from work

I know there are conversations in Human Design spaces suggesting Projectors are not supposed to work. That has never been a useful interpretation for me. I do not think Projectors need a work exemption, and I say that as an MBA-HR. I think we need a different relationship with work.

There is a difference between guiding energy and trying to become the source of it. You are here to share your input. Your value is in your insights, not your energy output.

There is a difference between using your insight and proving your worth through exhaustion.

There is a difference between being invited and being correctly recognized.

And there is a difference between having knowledge and knowing how and when (because... WAIT) to use your knowledge skillfully. That last one holds weight because reading about your design can give you language. Living it gives you data. Practice gives you skill.

That is why I started thinking about Projector OJT

Not another class where we spend 90 minutes talking about what Projectors are.

Not another conversation that ends with “wait for the invitation.”

You can’t Google or chat with your artificial intelligence about the human intelligence and lived experience in the room with us. I wanted a room where Projectors could bring their charts and real lives into the same conversation.

What happens when you stop trying to guide like another Projector and start developing skill with your own perception? That, to me, is the real on-the-job training. And being a Jovian Archive/IHDS licensed and certified Human Design/BG5 Analyst... I know the actual gap between the interpretations of the HD systems available online versus the actual framework that the original source and systems prescribe.

And I also realize that the resources for that level of training aren’t readily available to everyone. When the initiator of the Human Design system was alive, he’d offer Projectors a discount because he wanted us to get this so we could be in position to do what we are designed to do: lead the others back into alignment when the work stops working.

Wait for the invitation is an interaction strategy. It is not the job description. The deeper assignment is learning what you are here to see, how you are designed to guide, and where that guidance can actually make a difference. And maybe the next time the invitation arrives, the question is not simply:

Should I say yes? Maybe it is: Thanks for inviting me. But... Who all gon’ be there? What exactly are we doing? What are you recognizing me for? And does this deserve access to my energy? 😂

That is a much more interesting RSVP. Let’s join together on the 3rd Thursday of each month. I’ll open the training room twice, once at 9 AM Pacific and again at 5 PM Pacific, but I’m keeping the space small so I can actually see you all and guide you all. RSVP here: https://www.satorisynergy.com/event-list If you prefer 1:1 guidance, which is likely because us Projectors are designed for that, answer the C.A.L.L. and schedule your self-mastery masterclass.
