Frequent flyers, say it with me, ‘Put your mask on yourself first and then assist other passengers’. Life 101 teaches us a primary concept; you can only successfully be responsible for others after you’ve taken care of your responsibilities and needs as an individual.
“Response-ability”. With this skill, consider how you respond to the needs of others with the ability to provide the care or resources they need. Career Trait 27 is a team energy that is fueled to support, nurture and guide others, especially those your lead or mentor, to acclimate to the work culture and thrive in the environment.

With this skill activated in your Career Design Chart, whenever you really care about a project or a team member, you enhance it or improve their workplace environment. And just like nurturing a plant and taking responsibility for it, there is a sweet spot between it not surviving and it thriving. Your job is to ensure that the environment is correct and has the resources it needs to nurture its development and growth. Individuals with this trait prominent in their career design and are aligned with it find that they excel in fields such as healthcare, social work, education and in leadership roles.
Yes, guidance is a necessity but also too much interference can be counterproductive. Awareness about balancing meeting their needs and not creating a codependency dynamic is key. On the other hand, not showing a colleague the ropes and teaching them how to successfully navigate the work culture can prevent them from maturing into their full potential at the company.
You can intuitively know when someone needs support and when to help them handle their tasks on their own, self-empowered. Your care and energy for responsibility not only enhances work quality but also contributes to the development of a motivated and engaged workforce. You can create not only results, but also long-term partnerships based on appreciation and respect.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Make sure to balance caring for others with self-care so that it doesn’t tip into self-neglect or self-absorption where you are taking more than you are giving to others. As you learn to respond with your ability to support when it aligns with your gut, you can fully realize your potential. This way, you’ll be able to offer sincere help without losing yourself or volunteering for roles that don’t suit you. Being either self-sacrificing or self-centered are signs that you are not aligned with your best self and are not showing up effectively for yourself or your team.
Ask yourself:
Am I able to discern between selflessness and self-sacrifice? In what areas do I find it challenging to balance self-nourishment and giving to others?
How are my actions contributing to the legacy and values of my team or department?
