Key Career Trait 42: THE CLOSER

Updated: Apr 11

If Key Career Trait 42 is your superstar power in your Career Design Chart (top number in the right column), your most pronounced natural talent is the ability to guide projects to their most optimal conclusion. You’re the Finisher, the Closer! You champion development, learning from every experience and are designed to share your insights to inspire others to evolve and encourage their professional development as well. Your leadership style isn’t focused on quick results but ensuring that every project can be realized and every person can reach their full potential.

A natural project manager, you understand the beginning, middle and end of a work project and can see the bigger picture for the team. Seeing things through and completing each step or cycle is crucial for you to master similar projects in the future. This approach ensure long-term success for yourself and others working with you. You especially shine when it comes to getting stagnant processes back on track and providing clear structure.

This is the energy that understands that not every experience is linear and is open to respecting the natural flow of a process. It’s an appreciation that every experience is an opportunity to learn. Focus less on the outcomes, as they will take care of themselves, and focus more on the journey itself, that’s where the enrichment lives. Your contribution is not in mindlessly going through the motions or checking boxes. You foster an understanding within the team of how each step is purposeful and necessary for success.

You are on the team to make sure growth happens, driven by your desire to expand, accomplish great things and maximize potentials so that things work out in the best way possible. Here is a heightened sense of awareness of anything that is stopping progress which gives you the ability to lead the charge when it comes to overcoming obstacles. You can even self-examine and see how you are getting in your own way if that's the case.

A perfect position for you is in an environment where you can focus on one work cycle at a time and not be overwhelmed by parallel projects. You’ll thrive in a role where your decisions are respected as that strengthens your commitment. Once you are aligned and self-aware, having the ability to say yes or no and lead yourself or your team without the fear of negative consequences will generate satisfaction for yourself and everyone around you. Being free to not be limited by expectations and being able to detach from the outcome supercharges you and almost ensures that there will be a reason for celebration at the conclusion of whatever is before you.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

The challenge with this characteristic could be that its not always easy for you to let go and detach from a process or project that has matured and fulfilled it purpose. FOMO (fear of missing out) can cause you to hold on for too long. Learning to acknowledge that the experience is complete allows you the freedom to invest in the next, new thing and evolve the business or department.

If you focus on the outcomes instead of the experience, you will find yourself blindly leading yourself and others from expectations, be it optimistic or pessimistic. Leading with that type of expectation negates the experience and you will have to repeat it in some manner as you missed the lesson. Introverts may experience this as an inability to let go and go with the flow, fearing change and having a tight grasp, not wanting a phase to end. Extroverts may be experienced by others as being flaky, not be able to complete tasks due to avoiding disappointment by never fully committing to a project.

Be mindful that not every project or opportunity is the right one for you. It’s important for you to be able to choose the correct experiences for you and your team in the beginning by aligning your strengths and values with your gut intuition. By operating in this manner, you become a key player and sought after strategic thought leader in your organization capable of successfully closing out meaningful and impactful endeavors.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I have an appreciation for my natural talent of knowing when it’s time to bring something to completion?

  • What attachments do I have that are stunting the growth my business, career or team?

  • Am I in flow or am I doing things for the sake of being busy and not managing my expectations well?
