Trait 48: Expertise - Professional Development Key of the Week

Updated: Nov 5, 2024

With Trait 48, you embody a deep well of internal intelligence that you have acquired from your studies and experiences which have taught you everything that you need to know. Some people may ridicule you for being too deep, I urge you to accept that as the compliment that it is and make no apologies for guarding the deep well within.  It is your deep awareness and perspective that makes you a highly resourceful and a sought after expert in your field. Being deep and introspective is a superpower for you. The quality of your life experiences and how others experience you is directly connected to the depth at which you are willing to explore life.

At work, you support the team by sharing innovative solutions based on the depth of knowledge that you have. Your gift to the team is your self-trust knowing that the correct answer will emerge if you are connected with the correct people and projects that align with your values and respect your mastery and equanimity. Your EQ expands, enriches, informs, and counterbalances your IQ and together they make you a formidable, well-rounded professional. You excel because of your inherent gifts and cultivated talents. Your resourcefulness sparks an inner creativity that provides remarkable real time solutions for your team and business. The energy of the 48 has a presence that helps the collective anxieties and paranoia subside due to the refreshing wisdom that you make available. As the go-to expert, your team relies on your knowledge and wisdom to create a strong foundation for strategic planning and a springboard for action when executing.

Just as a well of water supplies health to a community, you are that well at work where the others come to sustain themselves. Your well of wisdom offers you no visibility into how deep it is, but others can surely sense it and will call on you to offer a real time solution to get back on track. You may have experienced imposter syndrome because you can't see your expertise and you only get to experience it as a witness when your wisdom is called out of you by others in the moment. One way to combat imposter syndrome is by acknowledging the knowledge you possess and by valuing yourself worth. Be mindful of the possibility of the Dunning-Kruger effect as well. This is a cognitive bias where someone tends to overestimate or underestimate their knowledge, skills, and abilities. Self-awareness assists with accurately accounting for the sophistication level of your expertise.

Take steps not to let your well run dry. Refresh yourself with pursuits that interest and fascinate you for your own well-being. Self-care and emotional development will serve you well. Being aware of your instincts and understanding that your feelings are intel gives you the guidance and insight necessary to recognize, correct and perfect your environment and projects. Only partake in things that you have a taste for to minimize the possibility of stage fright or newcomers paralysis. However, don't be afraid to try something new or go beyond your comfort zone thinking that you're not ready. Never let the fear of not knowing stop you from creating and sharing because that is what you are designed to do.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." -FDR

Trusting yourself is a crucial component to releasing any self doubt. When you hold on to self doubt instead of trusting yourself as the master that you are, you invite imposter syndrome which is just a lack of self trust. That feeling of inadequacy can lead you to feeling frustrated and like a fraud. Let go of the fear that you don't know enough and trust that all of your invested time, effort, connections and attention are always available to you. Even in the times when it seems like you can't mentally access your knowledge, the knowing is always present, ready, willing and able in your physical body and it knows what to do to meet the moment.

Trait 48 is one of my favorites, I'll admit that I'm biased here. I have this trait as part of a full strength (two traits that are connected and complement one another) and it is one of the ways I use my natural instincts to assess and discern the talents of others, the needs of businesses and point them in the right direction that is correct for them.
